With a vision to achieve food security, employment generation and income enhancement, the government department is now focusing on sustainable agriculture, along with specific focus on alternate crops like millets and developing the horticulture segment for crops like coconut, citrus fruits, banana, various spices, pineapple etc. With the changing food habits, emerging markets for agricultural commodities and enhanced disposable income of consumers, there is a need for a paradigm shift from subsistence livelihood activities to modern business enterprises. Therefore, both primary and secondary activities (production and post-production aspects) in this sector needs a befitting strategy to ensure sustainable and consistent growth. Addressing challenges like unavailability of machinery, high price fluctuations and post-harvest loss, limited market channels, connectivity and transportation issues etc. are actually bringing about newer and broader opportunities for well organized, market-oriented and technology-led development in cluster mode. Introducing science and technology-led production systems by imparting skill development, technical and vocational trainings to upscale knowledge, skill and attitude of youths will be a critical aspect going forward. An event like The Agri-Horticultural Show can definitely be a key enabler in realizing the vision for a better Agri-Horticultural ecosystem.
